Informative Notice: The USPTO Increases Filing Fees for U.S. Trademark Applications and Renewals
By Justin M. Jacobson, Esq.
In light of the announced changes, the USPTO formally increased the filing fees associated with U.S. trademark applications, renewals, intent-to-use, and various other filings. In particular, the filing fee for a U.S. trademark application will be increased from $250 to $350; and, in some cases, it increased more, depending on the nature of the application. Accordingly, it is highly advisable to prepare and file any trademark applications prior to the increase in filing fees to receive the previous lower rates.
Similarly, the filing fees associated with an “intent-to-use” trademark application has also increased. Finally, the USPTO has also increased the filing fees for letters of protest in addition to the costs associated with filing a trademark renewal. This fact means that all future trademark renewals and any other associated trademark filings will be subject to potential increased filing fee rates.
Consequently, in order to proceed with the previous lower filing fees, it is imperative that any potential trademark application and any outstanding trademark renewals are filed by an individual promptly in order to ensure that the current reduced filing fee rates are applicable to an application or renewal.
Finally, it is highly advisable to consult with a competent and experienced attorney to understand the specifics of an individual’s situation.
